1. What this policy covers
This policy covers the Acapella Editor website at acapellaeditor.com, including the browser editor at /editor, and the Acapella Editor Android app. The iPhone app has its own policy at /privacy-ios. The website and browser editor never ask you to register or sign in. In the Android app an account is optional and only needed to collaborate with friends (section 6).
2. The browser editor: everything stays on your device
The browser editor does all of its work inside your browser. The videos you record or import, the drafts you save and your video library are never uploaded to our servers. They are stored in your browser's IndexedDB storage on your device, and your finished video is rendered on your device (with FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly) and saved as a download.
- Camera and microphone are used only when you press Record, after your browser asks for permission. Recordings stay in your browser like any other clip.
- Drafts and library clips remain until you delete them in the editor or clear this site's data in your browser. Because they live in browser storage, your browser may also remove them when it runs out of space.
- The fonts, stickers and background music offered in the editor are downloaded from our own servers, so no third party sees what you pick.
3. Analytics and cookies on the website
We use Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID G-W7MEVP15MF) to understand how the website and the browser editor are used. It records page views and feature events such as a project being created, a recording starting or an export finishing, together with your browser and device type and an approximate location derived from your IP address. Google Analytics sets first-party cookies named_gaand_ga_W7MEVP15MFto tell visits apart; they expire after at most two years. This data is processed by Google LLC under thepolicies.google.com/privacypolicy, and Google retains event-level data for the period configured on our property (at most 14 months). You can opt out with Google's browser add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout or by blocking cookies for this site; the editor works exactly the same either way.
The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages and also uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts visits without cookies or fingerprinting. As our hosting provider, Cloudflare sees the IP address of every request in its logs. The website loads the DM Sans typeface from Google Fonts, so your browser sends your IP address to Google when it fetches that font.
4. Android app permissions
The Android app requests the following permissions:
Storage Access
- Read and write external storage (Android 10 and below)
- Read media images, video, and audio (Android 11+)
- Purpose: To save and load your recordings and projects
Camera and Microphone
- Camera access for video recording (optional)
- Microphone access for audio recording
- Purpose: To create audio and video recordings
Internet and Network
- Internet access
- Network state access
- Purpose: For online features and connectivity status
System Features
- Wake Lock: To prevent screen from sleeping during recording
- Foreground Service: For background recording capabilities
- Post Notifications: To inform you about recording status
5. Android app data
- Your recordings, imported media and projects are stored and edited on your device. They are only sent to our servers when you use collaboration (section 6).
- App usage events and your device and app version, collected with Firebase Analytics, and crash reports collected with Firebase Crashlytics, to improve the app and fix problems.
- Advertising: free users see ads from Google Mobile Ads (AdMob), which uses your device's advertising ID and device information to serve and measure ads. You can reset or delete the advertising ID in your Android settings. Premium subscribers do not see ads.
- Subscriptions: purchase history and subscription status, processed by Google Play and managed through RevenueCat. We never receive your payment details.
- App configuration and notifications: Firebase Remote Config and Firebase Cloud Messaging use a Firebase installation identifier.
6. Accounts and collaboration (Android app)
- Account (optional): if you sign in with Google we receive your name, email address and a Google account identifier, and you can set a display name. We use this to run your account and to show collaborators who you are.
- Collaboration is invite-only. When you share a project with friends, the reference you choose (a video with audio from your project, a backing music file, or metronome settings) is uploaded to our servers. When you record a part for a friend's project, your recording (video and audio) is uploaded. Uploaded media is available only to the people in that collaboration: the project's creator and the friends they invited. Collaborators see your display name.
- If you report a collaboration, we receive the reason you pick and any text you add.
- Collaboration media is stored on our servers (hosted by Cloudflare) until the expiry date shown for each collaboration (currently 30 days from when the collaboration is created), then deleted. Recordings a creator has already added to their project stay on the creator's device. Data is encrypted in transit.
- Delete your account in the app (Account → Delete account) or at acapellaeditor.com/delete-account. We delete your account information and the collaboration media you uploaded; your account is permanently erased within 30 days.
7. Who we share data with
We do not sell your personal data. Data is shared only:
- With Google, as the provider of Google Analytics and Google Fonts on the website, and of Firebase, Google Sign-In, Google Play and Google Mobile Ads in the Android app
- With Cloudflare, which hosts the website, our servers and collaboration media
- With RevenueCat, which manages subscriptions
- With the friends in a collaboration you create or join, as described in section 6
- When required by law, or with your explicit consent
8. Your rights
You can ask us what personal data we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, and object to analytics. For the website, the only personal data we hold are the analytics identifiers described above; your recordings, drafts and library are under your control in your own browser and can be deleted there at any time. For the Android app you can also delete your account yourself (section 6). If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, these rights come from the GDPR and you may also complain to your local data protection authority.
9. Children's privacy
We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13 years old.
10. Changes to this policy
When we change this policy we update the date below and, for material changes, note it in the app or on this site.
